Shopping for children’s clothes in Hong Kong often leads to a frustrating choice of bland, traditional outfits, very expensive designer brands or an outing to Stanley market in the hope of finding a happy balance of colour, price and style. Why dressing our little ones stylishly should be stressful, or a reason for breaking the bank, is a question many of us have asked ourselves and that two Hong Kong expats are trying to answer with the launch of Velveteen, a children’s clothing brand that is built around the concept that “little people deserve the same timeless elegance and exquisite craftsmanship that their stylish parents routinely enjoy”.
I’ve lost count of the times I have commented on a particularly unique baby outfit only to hear it was bought in the US, UK, Australia or elsewhere. Honk Kong’s children seemed doomed to roam the cities clad in pastel pinks, blues or (horror) yellows. As of a few weeks ago however our little fashionistas can get their hands on specialised hand dyed and block printed fabrics designed and created by Laura Egloff and Ambika Kaul, the founders of Velveteen.
Their debut collection will include the “Khaddi” style of hand block printing, where instead of vegetable pigments, silver or gold powder is hand embossed onto the fabric and the launch will happen through two Trunk Shows this month:
- 20-21 September | 11:00-19:00 | Petit Bazaar, No 9 Gough Street, Central
- 28-29 September | 11:00-19:00 | Tiny Footprints, 10/F Duddell Street, Central
Currently the collection can be viewed (and purchased) on line via Velveteen’s Facebook page, although a full website is expected to be launched by the end of the month.
